As I look back over the years when I had locs, I had forgotten how awesome I felt wearing them. It was so freeing after years of relaxing, pressing, blow drying and rollers. After shaving off all my relaxed hair, I wore braids. I liked the way I looked in braids, but keeping them up was a challenge. One day I took my braids out and decided to not rebraid. Locs were starting to become more acceptable in the work place in the late nineties as long as the were clean and well groomed, so, in 1998 I started my loc journey. I just did it. I didn't research or anything. I did the worst thing you could do for locing my natural hair. I started them with beeswax and then later bleached them. I never visited a loctician. I did them myself.
In spite of how my locs were started, I had a nice looking set of locs on my head.
My locs in 2001 (age 42)
Amazingly I wore my locs for 11 years with no issues, at least none that I was aware of.
It was hard doing the " big chop" but felt it was time. I have been wearing my hair in a natural and free ever since.
Now I am on a new loc journey. I know so much more about starting my locks with a healthier regimen.
Locing it up again.
